Emily Shannon began her career in biomedical engineering before discovering prosthetics through 3D printing. \u201cI always loved math and science, but I didn\u2019t want to go into medicine or research,\u201d<\/em> Emily said. \u201cIn the lab, you might work for years before seeing results. I wanted something more cause-and-effect, where you can see how your work changes someone\u2019s day.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her natural curiosity led her to a university club that printed open-source prosthetic hands. \u201cWe were just students learning how to print these designs and connect with people in the community,\u201d<\/em> she recalled. \u201cWhat really clicked for me was meeting real prosthetists. I met two women in the field, which was huge because it\u2019s still a pretty male-dominated industry. They showed me what this work actually looks like.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, Emily is known for her honesty and patient-first approach. \u201cThe media often makes it seem like myoelectric devices are mind-controlled robots,\u201d<\/em> she said. \u201cThat\u2019s not the reality. You flex one muscle to close the hand, another to open. Once people understand how it works, they can decide what\u2019s right for them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

With children, she focuses on building confidence, and that\u2019s what Open Bionics is all about. \u201cKids born with a limb difference already know how to adapt,\u201d<\/em> she said. \u201cA bionic arm just gives them another tool.\u201d<\/em> With adults, she takes the time to listen and set realistic expectations. \u201cTechnology only matters if it helps someone live better.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The Orlando amputee community is diverse, and Emily loves being a part of it. \u201cI see a lot of TRICARE families and adults who haven\u2019t worn a prosthetic in decades,\u201d<\/em> she said. She volunteers at a local Hand Camp, where she recently met a 70-year-old woman trying a bionic hand for the first time since her twenties. \u201cShe told me, \u2018If this makes even one percent of my day one percent better, it\u2019s worth it.\u2019 I loved that.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emily also encourages patients to embrace their devices with pride. \u201cThis arm isn\u2019t meant to blend in,\u201d<\/em> she explained. \u201cLike glasses or hearing aids, you can own it if you want to. The point is having that choice.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
