Travis\u2019 path to upper-limb care began in 2015 after a friend was paralyzed. \u201cI saw him interfacing with a medical device every day,\u201d <\/em>he said. \u201cThat sparked the idea that there\u2019s a whole world of professionals who build and fit these things.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He trained as a plaster technician and later worked in fabrication, where precision became second nature. \u201cI received casts of varying quality,\u201d <\/em>he said. \u201cThat taught me how to rectify models and make sure everything looked right before it ever got to a patient.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His extensive background as a technician shows up through his work at the Austin clinic. During the initial patient evaluations, Travis takes careful measurements, runs a quick myoelectric check using MyoPods<\/a>, and casts. Then he prints flexible TPU test sockets that mimic a finished fit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ll often prepare two test sockets from the same model, one conservative and one more fitted,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cPrinting both lets people compare comfort and control on day one.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recent case proved the point. \u201cWe ended up going with the more modified one,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cIt gave the best combination of stability and comfort.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

His human-centric process starts with the first interaction with a patient. \u201cI take my time during consults,\u201d<\/em> Travis said. \u201cI make sure all the big questions are answered, including timelines and insurance, so people leave fully informed.\u201d<\/em> He walks through each step in plain language. \u201cTell me what you want to do,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cI\u2019ll explain each the technical specs of each of our devices and how they are different and we will map the steps to get there.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Insurance is part of that plan from the beginning. \u201cHigh-tech upper-limb devices can face denials,\u201d<\/em> Travis said. \u201cWe don\u2019t take a denial at face value.\u201d<\/em> He coordinates with rehabilitation physicians who know how to document medical necessity, and he prepares appeals when needed. \u201cThe goal is to give each case the best chance to move forward,\u201d<\/em> he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evaluations are scheduled with time to think and tinker. \u201cThat\u2019s the beauty of this setup,\u201d <\/em>Travis said about Open Bionics\u2019 unique approach to patient care. \u201cIf an evaluation needs three hours because someone has a lot of questions, we take the time. People travel to see us. They deserve thorough answers and a good fit before they commit.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n

Travis is candid about what an upper-limb prosthesis should be. \u201cThis is your helper hand,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cWhen it stabilizes, holds and supports your sound hand, people actually want to wear it. Some people want to pour a drink or hold a book,\u201d <\/em>he said. \u201cTeens often want a prosthetic that feels personal. We map each goal to physical therapy and check back after delivery to fine-tune.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also likes to keep an eye out for what\u2019s next in the prosthetic industry. \u201cWireless control, waterproof designs and lighter components already make a difference,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cThe future is neuro-linked microprocessor interfaces and other emerging control systems that reduce latency between intention and movement. When asked what success looks like, Travis keeps it simple. \u201cThe best feedback is when someone says the arm made something easier than before, and makes people feel good wearing it. \u201d <\/em>he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
